Let's Talk NUTRIENTS.

NUTRIENTS

Nutrients can be separated into three categories: primary, secondary, and micro-nutrients. In nature, plants receive these nutrients from the soil content. In a controlled environment, we can create the optimal ratios of these nutrients and mix them specifically for the plants we choose to grow. In hydroponics, plants get these nutrients from the solution fed directly to the roots, rather than absorbing them out of the soil.

Primary Nutrients

Primary nutrients such as Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium are commonly referred to in the Horticultural Industry as N-P-K. These are the main nutrients needed in large quantities for a plant to survive. Primary nutrients are critical in plant structure, foliar growth, and facilitating photosynthesis.

Secondary Nutrients

Secondary nutrients include Magnesium, Calcium, and Sulfur. These are needed in less quantity than your primary nutrients, but in more quantity than your micro-nutrients. Secondary nutrients are critical to facilitate root growth, disease resistance, and overall growth regulation.

Micro-Nutrients

Micro-nutrients include iron, boron, copper, manganese, sodium, cobalt, silicon, selenium; these are required in small amounts. These nutrients help the plant regulate intake of our primary and secondary nutrients.

Too much or too little of any of these nutrients can cause deficiencies, unhealthy plants or fruits, and even death of the plant. Although each type of nutrient is required in different amounts, they are all essential in the health and development of a plant.

You will notice that there are "boxed" or "powdered" nutrients and "bottled" nutrients available. the "powdered" nutrients are your organic amendments. These nutrients get mixed into the soil at a specific ratio and feed the plant with each plain water feeding. "Bottled" nutrients will come in a few "parts."
Some bottled nutrients will only have 1 part to it that contains all of your primary, secondary, and micro-nutrients. Some bottled nutrients will have multiple parts. Using a multi-part solution or organic amendments allows for greater customization and control in your nutrient regimen.
